    Teaching and Learning

The Early Childhood Center (ECC) uses play-based pedagogy as the vehicle for learning. First introduced over 150 years ago by Friederich Froebel, a play-based pedagogy is not a new concept or approach to early childhood education. The foundations of our Reggio-inspired teaching practices can be found in the seminal works of Dewey, Erikson, Montessori, Piaget, and Vygotsky. In addition, the ECC references the current research-based Walker Learning approach to ensure teaching and learning is personalized and developmentally and culturally appropriate for young children.

At the ECC, children are active participants in their own learning. Children are enthusiastic and excited by learning through play. Teachers carefully structure learning opportunities through play, which ensures all children are challenged and develop an enjoyment of lifelong learning. Play-based pedagogy allows children to develop their natural curiosity and interest in learning. It allows them to develop at their own rate, with the adult practitioners carefully guiding and scaffolding learning to ensure all children achieve personal success.

What is play-based pedagogy? Play-based pedagogy is a learning approach where children learn through active, hands-on experiences. Based upon the strengths, needs, interests, and input of the children, there is purposeful flexibility in the provisions of the daily schedule, the environment, resources, interactions, and learning opportunities provided.

Why is play important? Current research indicates that play is essential for the healthy development of:

    • Intellectual growth – Play allows children to make sense of their world.
    • Creativity – Play allows children to develop attributes and attitudes like flexibility, spontaneity, curiosity and persistence.
    • Social Skills – Play allows children to form and explore friendships.
    • Language and Literacy Development – Play allows children to confidently exploring new sounds and noises associated with phonological awareness, as well as print awareness and letter knowledge.
    • Numeracy Development – Play allows children to compare, classify, quantify, and sort; Problem solve; Pattern, position, and measure.
    • Physical Development and Health – Play allows children to develop and refine gross and fine motor skills through active and repeated use of the large and small muscles.
    • Emotional development – Play allows children to develop self-regulation and emotional awareness as part of their confident, courageous, and positive self-concept.

Empowering and inspiring through challenge and compassion

At BCIS, we want all children to be empowered and inspired learners. As such, BCIS has developed a curriculum that best provides opportunities to differentiate and personalize according to a child’s readiness, interests, and learning styles. As an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, the BCIS curriculum creates a balance between acquiring essential knowledge and skills, developing conceptual understanding, demonstrating positive attitudes, and taking responsible action. Using a transdisciplinary approach, grade levels follow BCIS’ curriculum outcomes for Mathematics, Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Music, and Physical Education.

    The BCIS curriculum fosters;

    • curiosity, seeking understanding and enjoyment of lifelong learning.
    • academic achievement, physical well-being, and personal success.
    • knowledge developed from diverse perspectives.
    • awareness and understanding of local and global issues.
    • inquiry and risk-taking in a safe and caring learning environment.
    • academically rigorous challenge achieved through a differentiated approach.
    • creative thought, critical reasoning, and inspired action.
    • open and respectful communication.
    • shared responsibility for learning.
    • service to local and global communities.
    • commitment to environmental sustainability.
    • respect for self and others.
    • cultural understanding and linguistic diversity.
    • appreciation for the uniqueness of China.
